British Business Confidence Hits Highest Level Since March

British companies registered their strongest confidence reading since March this month, supported by a more favourable assessment of the economy, a fresh survey indicated, aligning with other recent data pointing to a brighter outlook.

Lloyds reported on Friday that its monthly business confidence gauge advanced four points in August to +53%, exceeding the +47% average recorded over the preceding twelve months. The bank highlighted that enterprises are experiencing heightened customer demand, increased optimism regarding the broader economy, and improved sentiment about their own commercial prospects, factors that are aiding investment and expansion initiatives.

Sentiment toward the wider economy climbed seven points to +49%, comfortably above its twelve-month mean of +37%. Firms' expectations for their own trading performance rose two points to +58%, marginally surpassing the +56% twelve-month average. The share of companies intending to increase prices over the coming year declined to its lowest level since 2022, falling three percentage points to 51%.

This follows S&P Global figures released last week indicating the quickest expansion for UK businesses in half a year, reinforcing other favourable indicators. The Lloyds findings were derived from an Ipsos poll of 1,200 British enterprises with annual revenues of at least £250,000 ($340,000).
