The US has asked tankers travelling through the Strait of Hormuz to sail only at specific times to guarantee military protection after Iran stepped up attacks on ships travelling at night, the Financial Times reported on Saturday.
Washington has been offering air-based defence since May to ships wanting to sail via a route hugging the Omani coast on the strait's southern side.
That period during which ships would be protected was cut down to two specific time slots daily around the start of September, the FT reported, citing emails sent by the US naval co-ordination centre to maritime advisers.
US forces have redirected 99 commercial vessels as of 11 September as part of its ongoing naval blockade of Iran, US Central Command (Centcom) said.
The naval blockade and recently announced harsher economic sanctions on Iran has so far only prompted more forceful responses from Tehran.

French public broadcaster France Télévisions has removed the online replay of a France 5 programme after actress Adèle Haenel used the broadcast to say that Israel’s was committing a genocide on Palestinians and France was complicit.
In a video shared by Quds News Network, Haenel appeared on La Grande Librairie on 9 September and used a closing segment to call for sanctions against Israel and freedom for Palestine.
She said her team recorded the segment because they expected her remarks to be edited out, but France Télévisions instead removed the entire replay from its website, according to QNN.
The broadcaster said the replay was removed because Haenel’s remarks on Palestine were not counterbalanced by an opposing viewpoint during the programme.

Israeli settlers opened fire on Palestinians at a farm east of Al-Mughayyir village, northeast of Ramallah, on Friday after residents attempted to prevent settlers from targeting a poultry farm, Wafa reported.
Marzouq Abu Naim, deputy head of the Al-Mughayyir village council, said Israeli forces subsequently intervened, firing tear gas at the Palestinians while protecting the settlers. No injuries were reported.
In a separate incident, two Palestinians from Al-Mughayyir were injured after being attacked by settlers on the Al-Ma'rajat road linking Ramallah and Jericho.
One of the injured Palestinians, Muhyi al-Din Abu Naim, said he and a colleague were returning from work in Al-Auja, in the Jericho governorate, when they came across a vehicle with a damaged tyre. As they attempted to help the driver, settlers who arrived in two vehicles attacked them with sticks and sharp tools, Wafa reported.
Muhyi al-Din and his colleague sustained fractures and bruises in the attack and were taken for medical treatment.
Israeli forces, meanwhile, opened fire at a vehicle in the city of Al-Bireh in the central occupied West Bank on Friday evening, causing it to overturn, Wafa reported.
The Muslim World League and Bahrain have condemned the drone attacks originating from Iraq on the East-West pipeline in Saudi Arabia, which has led to the closure of the key pipeline.
In a statement, World Muslim League secretary-general Mohammed bin Abdulkarim al-Issa said the attacks “violate all religious values, international and humanitarian laws and norms”.
Bahraini foreign ministry said in a statement, carried by Bahrain News Agency, that the attack was a “blatant violation” of international law, the UN Charter and principles of good neighbourliness.
The ministry said Bahrain stood in full solidarity with Saudi Arabia. While stressing that no country’s territory should be used as a launching pad for attacks on neighbouring countries, the ministry expressed support for Iraqi efforts to prevent similar attacks from recurring.
Saudi Arabia’s civil defence authorities have said the danger has passed in Sharurah governorate, withdrawing an earlier alert warning residents of a potential threat.
Similar announcements were made earlier about Taif and Khamis Mushait governorates. The authorities asked civilians to avoid gatherings and filming.
Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian has said Iran’s resistance to the US and Israel was rooted in its opposition to bullying and its support for the oppressed people, IRNA reported.
Addressing religious scholars, intellectuals and businesspeople in India on Friday, where he is attending the BRICS summit, Pezeshkian said “bullies, oppressors and those who rely on force eventually face defeat or destruction”.
He said individuals, families and rulers would be accountable for how they treated other people and whether they helped those in need, the report said.
Pezeshkian rejected the idea that a powerful government should be entitled to impose its will on other nations or compel them to follow its decisions.
He also said the United States is seeking to prevent nations from becoming independent, adding pressures, conflict and efforts to create divisions in Iran had increased since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, the report said.
He stressed that nations and individuals have equal rights and should be able to live together through justice and fairness.
Iraq ordered the closure of the Shalamcheh border crossing with Iran as a precautionary measure after the latest drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, two security sources told Reuters on Saturday.
The sources said a wide-scale operation was underway to pursue perpetrators of the attack on Saudi Arabia, which forced the temporary closure of the kingdom's vital East-West oil pipeline.
Yemen’s Houthis control the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait after seizing Mayyun Island, also known as Perim Island, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported.
Located at the centre of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, Mayyun Island is a key monitoring point overlooking the vital maritime passage.
Two Yemeni sources also told Reuters that Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces had withdrawn from Perim Island.
The development came after Houthis seized the western coastal city of Mocha, forcing the government forces to retreat toward the south and the city of Dhubab.
The Sanaa-based Yemen Press Agency, citing field sources, said Houthi forces seized the al-Omari camp overlooking the strait.
Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree was also reported as saying that navigation in the Red Sea was safe except for Saudi ships, suggesting the group now has control over the Strait of Mandeb.
Known as the "Gate of Tears" in Arabic, because of its history of shipwrecks, the strait sits at the southern tip of the Red Sea, connecting it with the Gulf of Aden in the Indian Ocean.
About 100 kilometres long and just 30 kilometres wide at its narrowest point, it separates Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula from Djibouti and Eritrea on the Horn of Africa.
With the Red Sea linking maritime trade between Europe and Asia, the strait is usually one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
Oil tankers and cargo ships use it to reach the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal, shortening journeys between Asia and Europe and North America by thousands of kilometres (miles).
In 2024, as the Houthis attacked Red Sea shipping during the Gaza war, Suez Canal traffic fell sharply and has yet to recover, according to IMF PortWatch data analysed by AFP.
Total transits dropped from 26,895 vessels in 2023, or 73.7 per day, to 14,498 in 2024 and 14,070 in 2025, AFP reported.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree has said that except for Saudi ships, maritime navigation in the Red Sea is safe, Al Jazeera reported.

Foreign ministers of Iraq and Saudi Arabia spoke on the phone early Saturday morning after a drone launched from Iraqi territory targeted the kingdom's East-West oil pipeline.
Iraqi foreign minister Fuad Hussein and his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud exchanged views “on the latest developments in the region and developments of common interest”, according to Iraqi foreign ministry.
The ministry said the two sides “stressed the importance of continued communication, coordination and consultation between the two countries, which contributes to supporting security and stability in the region and enhancing joint cooperation”.
Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier condemned the drone attack on the East-West Pipeline in the Riyadh and Madinah, which resulted in injuries and damages.

Israeli forces attacked the area west of Beit Jinn in southern Syria twice on Friday and opened fire towards civilian homes in Maariya in western Daraa, according to Syria's official SANA news agency.
An Israeli artillery shell landed on agricultural land west of Beit Jinn earlier on Friday, causing no injuries or property damage. Israeli forces later shelled the area again, marking the second attack near the town that day.
Israeli forces also opened fire towards civilian homes in Maariya. No injuries or property damage were reported.
