Stellar has officially announced the upcoming Bell update (Protocol 30), which will radically simplify the integration of large fintech platforms and custodial services. The large-scale network upgrade introduces a new address format, moves the ledger to millisecond timing, and implements post-quantum encryption standards.

The release of stable infrastructure and SDK versions is rolling out right now, between October 16 and 23, 2026, and the final validator vote is scheduled for November 23.

For retail XLM holders, the announced hard fork will proceed as normal: coins are safe, and no manual exchange or asset migration will be required. However, the technological changes directly affect the token's economics and utility value.

How it works and what it means for XLM holders

The announced Bell update package focuses on removing architectural barriers for the commercial sector and includes three key specifications:

  • CAP-84 (W-addresses): Introduces multiplexing for smart contracts. Banks and exchanges can now use a single contract to manage the balances of millions of customers instead of creating separate wallets for each user.
  • CAP-88 (Millisecond timing): Switches the system clock from seconds to milliseconds, creating an engineering foundation for sub-second ledger closing in the future.
  • CAP-87 (Quantum shield): Integrates support for the ML-DSA post-quantum signature standard directly into Stellar Core, protecting Soroban smart contracts without making transactions more expensive.

The Bell update is purely pragmatic in nature. At the same time, the transition to the new protocol is strictly mandatory: infrastructure, wallets, and exchanges that do not update their SDKs by November 23 will lose the ability to recognize new ledger blocks.

For long-term investors, this upgrade creates clear fundamental factors.

Simplifying custodial models through W-addresses reduces fintech costs. This stimulates an influx of real business, increases transaction volume, and drives organic demand for XLM to pay fees.

The non-optional nature of the update for node operators reduces the risk of a network split to zero. Unofficial forks or coin splits will not occur.

In addition, quantum readiness and sub-second speeds are baseline requirements for the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA). This is exactly the sector Stellar is currently strategically targeting.
