Fed's Collins Sees Mixed Inflation Report, Signals Patience on Rates

Boston Fed chief Susan Collins characterized the latest U.S. inflation figures as a mixed bag during an interview on Thursday at the central bank's annual Jackson Hole gathering in Wyoming. While the headline number exceeded forecasts, she pointed to a collection of disparate factors—rather than broad-based pressures—as the reason, suggesting they alone would not compel the Federal Reserve to tighten monetary policy.

As an illustration, Collins highlighted the uptick in portfolio management fees, which she attributed to rising equity valuations instead of typical supply-demand dynamics. This left her maintaining a projection that inflation would likely ease on its own, though she acknowledged a willingness to hike rates should that outlook fail to materialize.

The overall reading was somewhat above her expectations, Collins said, but a closer examination revealed encouraging elements, notably that monthly price increases for market-driven goods and services hovered near the Fed's 2% objective. Her baseline scenario still envisions a gradual cooling of inflation under the current policy rate, which is viewed as modestly restrictive.

Research from the Boston Fed suggested additional factors could temper price pressures, including gains in productivity and signs that tariff-related inflation from the Trump administration's import duties may be largely exhausted. Collins described the report as mixed, adding that a truly widespread rise across market prices would have been far more troubling.

The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index climbed at a 3.7% annual pace in July, significantly above the Fed's target, leading some of Collins's colleagues to argue for immediate rate increases. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is slated to address the topic on Friday during his keynote remarks at the conference.

Collins noted she has been monitoring the recent climb in bond yields, which directly influence economic activity forecasts. She said she saw no evidence thus far that inflation expectations were starting to drift upward. Measures of inflation compensation, whether derived from investor demand or inflation-protected securities pricing, remain aligned with price stability, she added.

Regarding the broader yield movement, Collins said pinpointing every contributing factor was difficult. When asked about Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's recent bond market actions and their implications for the Fed, she declined to comment specifically on his moves, stating the central bank would evaluate developments and respond appropriately, while acknowledging it is challenging to anticipate such matters in advance.
