Major crypto exchange Binance has announced support for the Base network upgrade and hard fork scheduled for September 30, 2026.

Base is an Ethereum layer 2 incubated by the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and will undergo the Cobalt upgrade, which improves the B20 token standard, adds validity transactions, introduces dynamic node upgrades, and migrates TEE signer registration to onchain attestation verification on September 30, 2026.

To support the network upgrade and hard fork, Binance announced that it will suspend deposits and withdrawals of tokens on the Base network at about 17:00 (UTC) on September 30, 2026.

The network upgrade and hard fork of Base are expected to take place around 18:00 (UTC) on September 30, 2026.

The trading of tokens on the Base network will not be impacted, as Binance will handle all technical requirements involved for all users.

Deposits and withdrawals for tokens on the Base network will be reopened once the upgraded network is deemed to be stable, without a separate announcement.

About Base's Cobalt upgrade

Base's Cobalt upgrade brings improvements to the B20 token standard, allowing users to pay transaction fees in B20s, schedule multiplier updates, transfer blocked simplification, and new Union and Intersect policies. It also introduces validity transactions, while Dynamic Upgrades brought about by the Cobalt upgrade introduce an Ethereum smart contract that stores upgrade timestamps for Base nodes, allowing nodes to query the contract and apply changes live.

Cobalt changes how new Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) signers are registered, allowing AWS Nitro attestations to be trustlessly verified fully onchain using checked P-384 hints, replacing the RISC Zero and Boundless proving flow.

Denim, a separate upgrade planned for October 2026, introduces native blocks at a 200ms cadence, onchain millisecond time through BaseTime, and millisecond-resolution RPC timestamps.
