Iran ian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Friday that the time had come to conclude the protracted conflict with the United States, arguing that Tehran currently holds an advantage over Washington. He remarked that ending the war now is preferable because Iran finds itself in a situation of strength and honor, adding that global opinion recognizes Iran's success and criticizes America for striking schools, hospitals, and infrastructure in breach of all norms, leaving Washington widely detested.
Earlier, Iran's foreign ministry had accused the U.S. of engaging in economic terrorism and crimes against humanity after Washington signaled it would intensify sanctions to increase pressure on Tehran. In a statement distributed by state media, the ministry asserted that those behind and promoting these sanctions should face prosecution and punishment for such severe offenses. Additional senior Iranian officials voiced opposition to the U.S. sanctions strategy, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posting on X that the so-called Economic D-Day serves as a distraction from America's own difficulties, including record debt and rising interest expenses.
Negotiations between the two nations remain suspended, with both parties deadlocked in the conflict initiated by the U.S. and Israel in late February. Tehran continues to keep the strategic Strait of Hormuz closed, while Washington maintains a naval counter-blockade against Iran. The U.S. had called on other nations, including China, to participate in efforts to isolate Iran's economy.
When asked about U.S. President Donald Trump's warnings, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters on Friday that sanctions and pressure are not effective solutions to the matter. He urged all parties to adopt responsible actions and seek a resolution through political and diplomatic channels. Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit the White House on 24 September, where Iran is likely to be a key subject, similar to when Trump visited Beijing for a summit in May.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that the move to escalate economic sanctions against Iran reduces the likelihood of Washington needing to resume major military operations against the country. He stated that he would offer more specifics on the economic measures during a press conference on Monday.
Iran has faced Western sanctions for an extended period and has grown skilled at partially bypassing them. It has boosted local manufacturing, relied on informal cross-border trade routes, acquired restricted goods via intermediary nations, and employed a covert fleet to transport its oil. Hadi Kahalzadeh, an expert on Iran's economy at Brandeis University, noted that Iran's ability to withstand pressure not only prevents collapse but also stops economic hardship from converting into the political pressure and shifts that the U.S. anticipates.
Nevertheless, the International Monetary Fund projects that inflation in Iran will climb to nearly 70% by year-end, with the economy expected to contract by over 5%. Although gasoline has stayed inexpensive due to state subsidies, this situation may not persist as supply becomes tighter. A presidential aide informed Iranian state television last week that the country now consumes more gasoline daily than it produces, potentially forcing Tehran to increase prices, a step that has previously triggered large-scale demonstrations.
In light of these economic challenges, Pezeshkian has stated that his administration supports a negotiated conclusion to the war, emphasizing concerns about people's livelihoods and economic conditions. However, the most influential entity in Iran remains the elite paramilitary IRGC, which has emerged stronger after enduring U.S. and Israeli strikes that eliminated Iran's senior leaders in the conflict's initial phase. The IRGC is advocating for more substantial concessions from the U.S., such as Iranian authority over Hormuz and reparations for the war.
With peace talks at a standstill, Iran's hardliners are confident they can outlast their opponents in enduring economic strain. This month, Iran's Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei appointed a former IRGC commander to lead the country's influential Supreme National Security Council, indicating a preference for the hardline stance.
