Reece Merrick, Ripple Senior Executive Officer/Managing Director, Middle East & Africa, attended the recently concluded Dubai Fintech Summit held between November 2 and 3, 2026, organized by DIFC as part of Dubai Future Finance Week.
In 2024, Ripple announced a partnership with the DIFC Innovation Hub, the thriving innovation ecosystem of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), to accelerate blockchain innovation in the UAE.
Ripple announced in 2026 its expansion in the UAE with the opening of its Middle East and Africa (MEA) regional headquarters in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). The announcement highlighted the firm's strategic presence in the country.
In a recent X post, Merrick highlighted his participation at the Dubai Fintech Summit as part of a panel that explored how digital assets could scale. The details gathered from his X post revealed that representatives from BlackRock, Standard Chartered and Robinhood were also participants in this discussion.
Institutional adoption no longer the question
Merrick said the consensus among participants was clear, as the question was no longer whether institutional adoption would happen, but what infrastructure needed to change to support it.
The Ripple executive went on to share a few takeaways from the discussion with BlackRock, Standard Chartered and Robinhood executives in his X post.
First was the growing need for financial infrastructure that operates around the clock. Merrick noted that the next generation of digital asset markets will require always-on payment and settlement systems, rather than relying on traditional market opening hours. "The 24/7 reality: The next generation requires always-on rails. Markets with 'opening hours' just won't cut it," Merrick wrote.
The second point was about the importance of bridging traditional finance (TradFi) and decentralized finance (DeFi). Merrick said that to achieve growth in tokenized markets, institutions will need bank-grade infrastructure, reliable custody solutions and effective risk management systems to participate at scale.
"Bridging TradFi & DeFi: Scaling tokenized markets requires real bank-grade infrastructure, custody, and risk management," Merrick wrote.
