U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Paul Atkins has reiterated the agency's dedication to a comprehensive crypto regulatory regime, despite recent legislative challenges in Washington, D.C.

The SEC chairman took to X recently to commend outgoing White House Crypto Council Executive Director Patrick Witt's efforts toward the crypto initiatives of the Trump administration.

"Patrick's tireless leadership played a key role in pushing forward President Trump's vision of American crypto dominance," wrote Atkins. The SEC chairman added that it was a pleasure to work with Patrick Witt.

Atkins went on to reiterate the agency's dedication to achieving the grand plans of the crypto policies of the administration. "We will carry the fight forward at the SEC to provide a common-sense, comprehensive crypto market structure in the U.S.," affirmed Atkins.

The SEC chairman noted that the proposed regime would take Patrick Witt's efforts a step further in the realization of President Donald Trump's vision of making the U.S. a crypto superpower.

More uncertainty

Atkins' statement comes amid growing uncertainty around the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act).

The CLARITY Act is aimed at providing clarity on regulatory jurisdiction between the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The CLARITY Act failed to make it to the Senate on September 15 as it could not clear the procedural barrier of at least 60 votes in the upper chamber.

This has refocused the debate around federal regulators' role in providing clarity via existing regulatory powers.

Under the leadership of SEC Chairman Atkins, the agency has already been working toward revising its approach to digital assets.

In September, Atkins announced temporary regulatory relief to ease the trading of some tokenized stocks. He did underscore the need for more rulemaking to create a sustainable crypto regulatory structure.

On the other hand, the exit of Patrick Witt has resulted in yet another change in leadership in the White House's digital assets policy team.

Witt, who was instrumental in discussions around the CLARITY Act, has exited his role as the temporary White House assignment came to an end. His exit follows several other high-profile departures from the administration's digital assets policy team.
